Household Affordability Index

South African workers, mostly remunerated on extremely low wages, are under enormous stress.

The April 2022 Household Affordability Index, which tracks food price data from 44 supermarkets and 30 butcheries.

The average cost of the Household Food Basket increased by R94,39 (2,2%), from R4 355,70 in February 2022 to R4 450,09 in March 2022.

The average cost of the Household Food Basket decreased by R45,33 (-1%), from R4401,02 in January 2022 to R4355,70 in February 2022.

The average cost of the Household Food Basket increased by R349,82 (8,6%), from R4 051,20 in January 2021 to R4 401,02 in January 2022.

Times are tough. Times are going to get tougher. Food prices rise again.

Statistics South Africa’s recently updated Food Poverty Line is now R624 per capita per month.
