Imam Muhsin Hendricks

Muhsin dedicated his life to two principled ideals: promoting an Islam that is all-inclusive and compassion-centered, and ensuring that the rights of all Muslims are respected and valued regardless of who they love.

Through his work with Al-Fitrah and, more recently, the Al-Ghurbaah Foundation, Muhsin taught us that religious rights and queer rights are fundamental human rights that can be embodied in tandem and deserving of respect and dignity. His unwavering commitment to justice and equality empowered many, fostering a spirit of love, acceptance and inclusivity that is all too rare in our world today. Muhsin was deeply committed to the conviction that the fight for justice was not just for the benefit of a selected few but for everyone. He worked tirelessly to break down barriers, challenge prejudice, and create spaces of safety and belonging—right until the very end.

Now more than ever, we need more people like Muhsin – who seek to defeat hate with compassion, cruelty with generosity, and violence with care.

The Cape Town team will miss Mushin. May his legacy continue to inspire all those he taught, uplifted, and welcomed into his sanctuary of compassion, understanding, and love.

Our heartfelt condolences to Muhsin’s loved ones, family, friends, and colleagues at the Al-Ghurbaah Foundation. May you find comfort in knowing that his impact will live on in the hearts and memories of all who had the privilege to know him.
