Journalism Fellowship Responds to GBV

Listen

Research finds that a woman dies at the hands of an intimate partner every 8 hours in South Africa. Living free from violence is our human right. Through the support of the HBF and NSM journalism fellowship, youth reporters in South Africa use the platform of radio to speak out against gender based violence and domestic violence. The fellowship was undertaken in partnership with the Children’s Radio Foundation.

The following radio features were produced through a journalism fellowship associated to the HBF and the National Shelter Movement of South Africa's "Enhancing the State's Responsiveness to GBV: Paying the True Costs" EU-funded project.

The fellowship enabled a group of youth reports to develop content for radio on domestic violence and services available for abused women with a particular focus on intimate partner violence and shelters. Thus far 11 features have been produced and broadcast by 3 radio station partners with radio graduates in the following areas: Alexandra (Johannesburg, Gauteng), Atlantis (Western Cape) and Kwamashu (Durban, KwaZulu-Natal).
