In June 2024, PMBEJD calculates that workers’ families will underspend on food by a minimum of 51,9% (having R1 765,24 left over after transport and electricity, and with food costing R3 667,73).

Whilst the rate of inflation is coming down, it is important to note, that inflation on food is still 5,1% higher now in May 2024 than it was a year ago.

The Child Support Grant is such an important intervention.  It is well targeted and well used.  If increased it has major potential for universal improvements in equity, economic growth, and employment.

March price data shows a marginal increase in the total cost of the average household food basket.  28 foods increased, and 16 foods decreased in March.  All baskets fluctuated quite unpredictably this month. 

Women are still under enormous pressure to ensure that basic foods are on their family plates and that small amounts of nutritious food are available for their children.  

In January 2024, food baskets increased in all areas tracked (Joburg, Durban, Cape Town, Springbok, Pietermaritzburg and Mtubatuba).

The average cost of the Household Food Basket increased by R42,40 (0,8%), from R5 081,94 in July 2023 to R5 124,34 in August 2023.
