South Africa’s shelters for abused women provide far more than a roof over someone’s head. They offer vital support to survivors as they navigate the aftermath of abuse and consider their next steps. Yet inadequate government funding leaves many shelters struggling to cover the full cost of the services women need and deserve.
This video in this series explores the vital role of shelters in responding to domestic violence in South Africa, the funding challenges they face, and the state’s responsibility to ensure that survivors have access to adequate support.
Produced in partnership with Cape Town TV, the series forms part of the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the National Shelter Movement of South Africa’s Enhancing the State’s Response to GBV: Paying the True Costs project, funded by the European Union. The project examines the true costs of providing domestic violence support services and seeks to strengthen state accountability for their adequate and sustainable funding, particularly for shelters supporting abused women.
