Climate reporting in the media and through various news outlets is therefore a critical role of modern day journalism that calls decision makers and political representatives to account for action against dangerous climate change, particularly in safeguarding the disadvantaged and vulnerable communities. The Climate Governance in Africa (CGA) programme under Heinrich Boll Foundation Southern Africa in partnership with Inter Press Services (IPS) Africa initiated climate governance training for a number of journalists from sub-Saharan Africa towards the end of 2013. The training was held from 26-29 November via a participatory workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa in which journalists learnt how to analyse practical issues on the governance of climate change and performed exercises on reporting climate governance. The journalists were also able to share their experiences reporting on various aspects of climate change in their countries and committed to publishing climate stories for their countries and home towns following the workshop.
To compliment their learning, HBS commissioned experts to develop fact sheets on 4 selected topics on the governance of climate change in Africa. The fact sheets, covering an overview of climate governance on the continent, gender issues in the fight against climate change, policy coherence for climate and development policies and issues surrounding climate finance for Africa were handed out at the workshop. The fact sheets provide a useful background resource to all stakeholders working on climate governance in Africa and give a snapshot overview of the key issues as they relate to Africa in the climate negotiation processes.
