Forced to Face Sterilisation in South Africa

At least 38 countries have seen reports of involuntary sterilisation over the past 20 years, with some of those cases involving women being sterilised against their will whilst giving birth. South Africa is one such country. In April this year, BBC spoke to two members of our partner, Her Rights Initiative (HRI), a social impact organization that advocates for sexual and reproductive rights of women living with HIV, who were forced or coerced into being sterilized. Watch here the South African segment of BBC's documentary to get a glimpse into the impact that involuntary sterilization - a practice described by the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health as "gross, inhumane and degrading" - has had on the lives of these women.
